Vintage Ties back again
So do you happen to be the guy at the office that gets the “Hey man, nice tie!” comment all the time? Do you happen to own a lot of vintage ties? Do you want to? Did you know that like a lot of the other vintage items that are back in style, vintage ties are definitely following suit? Did you know that? Well, vintage ties have definitely hit the market once again!
They are all over the place, you see them in the fashion magazines and the tabloids, you see them at your local retail store, and probably think “I have one that looks just like this!”
Well, truth be told, you probably do. As they say, what we don’t learn from history we will write more than once. For some reason vintage, just seems to be, back in style. (continue below products)
So you want to get in on this fantastic fantasy of ties that remind you of the 70’s? Of course you do! But there are some pivitol points that you need to watch out for when picking a tie. The first thing you should watch out for is whether you want skinny tie, vintage ties, or skinny vintage ties. From that point on it’s smooth sailing, because now you know what it is to look for.
However you do need to be wary of the designs on your tie. If the tie sports an image that is supposed to either be perfectly symmetrical or centered. If this is the case, make SURE the design is actually centered. If it is not, the anchor of the design (the part that is designed to be the visual hot-spot) will be off center. This isn’t that big of a deal, however it does get kind of annoying, not to mention distracting.
Length is another thing to consider when buying vintage ties. Many people overlook the vintage ties thinking that they are boys ties (on average the ties are usually 55 inches). This, however, can be circumvented, or avoided altogether. There are certain ways to tie the tie that will still achieve that belt length, or some even go as far as going to a tailor and fixing the tie around the collar area just to add the extra inches.
You need to be careful taking the tie to traditional dry cleaners as some chemicals may be too harsh. If you have ever owned a thin vintage tie, you will understand when you hear that the fabric is just another part of the appeal, but it’s a great part of the appeal. Saying this, you’ll also know that the material is vintage, and there for must be taken care of.
Did you know that most neck ties don’t get cleaned for years, and usually only get cleaned because of the time period, not because they are dirty. Being said there is a lot to consider when you invest in vintage ties. So get out there and get the best tie you can!
